BACKGROUND
New Hope Education Centre have been in existence for about a half a decade. Like in every life of an institution, it presented the unique opportunity to look back and reflect on what has been done achieved in moulding the youth, review the present situation and assess the viability of the centre in view of current realities and emerging issues in Kenya and beyond. Thus, the board of directors took the initiative to consult wide and spend weeks in retrospection, undertook a strategic review and assessment. The review process involved an extensive consultation with the stakeholders; looking at critical questions about the need for the Centre’s existence, its role, viability and sustainability. This crucial step ensures that the Centre remains relevant, focused and responsive to the needs of our communities, respective organizations and networks.
HISTORY
New Hope Education Centre started as place where orphans and vulnerable children from poor households within the expansive Mathare slum were rescued to get basic education. Around 2014, Rev Davies with feeling of giving hope and in discussions with one of his congregants Mr. Francis Mallo started by gathering children in church hall which was then divided using hardboard as classrooms. Firsts to be enrolled into this makeshift class were Sunday school children and with intense prayers, the number of children grew. Witnessing intense desperation among the residents of Mathare Slums, they started a porridge only food program as a pull factor to bring more children who would desperately languish around the slum area to the centre. Eventually New Hope Education Centre was registered in 2017 with Mr, Mallo taking care of the process and has since remain the administrator to date. During that time the centre had 30 Learners kid majority being the children of fellow congregates among them those of Francis Mallo’s and Rev Davies’.
